The High Priestess tarot card symbolism: what the picture shows

She’s guarding a doorway. The High Priestess sits between two pillars, a black one marked B and a white one marked J, and behind her hangs a veil that blocks the view of whatever lies beyond. The letters stand for Boaz and Jachin, the two bronze pillars that stood at the entrance of Solomon’s Temple in the Bible. One dark and one light, they’re usually read as opposites held in balance, like knowing and not knowing, and their tops are shaped like lotus flowers.

The veil is decorated with pomegranates and palm leaves, old symbols of fertility and abundance. Pomegranates also recall Persephone, who ate a few pomegranate seeds in the underworld and had to return there for part of every year. The veil is thin enough to suggest there’s a whole world behind it and solid enough that you can’t see in. She isn’t letting anyone through yet.

Her crown is shaped like the phases of the moon, a full disk held between two curved horns, and a crescent moon rests at her feet. She wears an equal-armed cross on her chest. In her lap she holds a scroll marked TORA, partly covered by her robe, so only some of what she knows is showing.

Her blue robe falls to the floor and seems to turn into flowing water as it goes, which ties her to her element, water, and to the Moon, her planet. Readers often connect that water with the subconscious, the part of the mind that works below the surface.

She’s card two of the Major Arcana. In the Tarot de Marseille, centuries before the Rider-Waite deck, she was La Papesse, the female pope, and Waite gave her the moon imagery and temple pillars that most modern decks still use.

The High Priestess tarot card meaning: the upright card

Some answers arrive as a feeling before they arrive as facts, and this card is about those answers. Upright, the High Priestess describes intuition you can rely on, like the hunch about a new friend or the apartment that looked perfect online and felt wrong the moment you walked in.

She also keeps secrets. She turns up when something isn’t fully known yet, information that hasn’t surfaced or a part of yourself you’re only beginning to understand. Her style is to watch and listen before deciding, so her advice almost never involves rushing. Next to the Magician, card one, who puts every tool on the table, she shows how much you can learn by sitting still.

In daily life she looks like the woman who feels uneasy about a business partner and rereads the contract one more time before signing. She’s also the dad who notices his teenager has gone quiet and offers a drive to get tacos instead of a lecture.

Dreams, gut feelings and the things you notice without trying all count as information with this card. That doesn’t make every anxious thought a message, though. Her version of knowing feels calm and steady, while fear usually feels loud and urgent, and learning to tell them apart is a big part of what she teaches.

My own habit with this card is to read it last, after everything else in the spread, because it usually explains what the other cards are hinting at.

The High Priestess tarot card in love and relationships

In love, the High Priestess deals in mystery. She describes attraction that runs deeper than words, feelings that haven’t been spoken yet and a strong sense about someone that you can’t fully explain. Grand declarations are rare with her, and a look across the room can say more than a speech. In a reading about a specific person, she often says there’s more going on beneath the surface than either of you has admitted.

If you're single

There may be someone on your radar you haven’t said much to, a quiet crush or a person whose messages you read twice. The card favors letting that connection unfold without forcing it, and it asks you to trust your read of people early on. If a first date leaves you uneasy for reasons you can’t name, the High Priestess says that feeling counts. Long late-night text conversations that feel like more than small talk are part of the picture too. She can also describe a season of turning inward, when you’d rather understand what you want than date for the sake of it.

If you're in a relationship

In a long-term relationship, the card often points to a strong intuitive bond, the couple where each person knows what the other is thinking from across the dinner table. Something important may also be going unsaid, a worry or a wish one partner is keeping private. Nothing here confirms anything sinister, so going through a phone would be the wrong response. What the card favors is a gentle, private conversation where both people feel safe enough to say what’s underneath, maybe on a walk where nobody has to make eye contact the whole time.

Reconciliation and your ex

An ex who stays on your mind for no clear reason fits this card. The High Priestess suggests there are feelings or facts between you that were never fully spoken. Her advice is to wait a while before reaching out and to get clear on what you actually feel, as opposed to what you miss. She can’t read the other person’s mind for you, and any reunion would need both of you to say the unspoken parts out loud. If you do reach out eventually, a short, sincere message says more than a long explanation.

The High Priestess as feelings: how someone feels about you

This person is drawn to you and curious about you, and they’re keeping it to themselves, sometimes because they’re unsure how you feel. The card shows interest that’s real and private, and it may take time and a safe moment before it’s said out loud. Small signs, like remembering details you mentioned once, can say more than words here.

The High Priestess as intentions

This person is keeping their plans close to the vest. The card shows someone thoughtful who isn’t ready to say more yet, and who may be watching how things develop before committing to anything. If you want to know more, the card favors making room for them to talk, without pressing.

How someone sees you

You strike this person as hard to read, in an intriguing way. They notice depth and a calm that makes them curious, and they may sense that you understand more than you say. Part of their interest comes from wanting to know what you’re really thinking.

The High Priestess tarot card in career and money

Work questions with this card often involve information you don’t have yet. A reorganization may be in the works or a role may not be exactly what the listing says. The card favors keeping your own plans private until they’re settled and paying attention to what isn’t being said in meetings. If you’re the one keeping a confidence at work, the card supports staying discreet. If you’re job hunting, a conversation with someone who already works at the company may tell you more than the posting does.

It suits careers built on listening and insight, like counseling, research, psychology and writing. If you’re weighing an offer, it asks you to check how the place feels as well as what it pays, and to ask the questions nobody volunteered answers to. In a negotiation, the person who listens longer usually learns more. Students and researchers do well with this card too, since it favors independent study and work that rewards patience, like a thesis or a long investigation.

Before you invest or lend money, the card asks for the details on paper. A hunch that something is off deserves a closer look, ideally with a qualified advisor, and if someone insists a deal has to be signed today, that pressure is a reason to slow down.

The High Priestess as a person

People who notice everything and say little fit this card. They’re intuitive and private, often a counselor, a researcher or the friend everyone tells their secrets to because they never repeat them. They listen far more than they talk, and when they do speak, people pay attention. They’re also good at hearing you out without rushing to fix anything. They can be hard to get close to, and some people mistake their reserve for coldness when it’s really caution about who gets let in. Often they saw the breakup or the layoff coming months before anyone else did.

The High Priestess reversed meaning

When the High Priestess reverses, the inner voice gets drowned out. You may have known something was off and gone ahead anyway, like the person who felt uneasy about a roommate’s references and signed the lease regardless. Or you may be asking everyone’s opinion except your own, polling friends and group chats until your own view disappears.

Secrets may start coming out with the card upside down. Someone’s hidden motive may become visible, or a truth you’ve been keeping may be harder to hold. Nothing in the card names who is hiding what, so it’s no basis for accusing anyone.

The reversal can also show you pulling away. You withdraw from people, stop sharing how you feel or get so lost in your own head that small worries turn into big stories. Overthinking is part of it, replaying a conversation on the drive home until it means something it never meant.

The High Priestess tarot card reversed, Rider-Waite deck
The High Priestess reversed

The High Priestess reversed in love

Love questions with the reversed card often involve something unsaid that’s starting to leak out, like a feeling one person has been hiding or a disconnect neither partner has named. Someone may be ignoring their gut about a person because they want it to work. A calm conversation will do more good than detective work.

The High Priestess reversed in career and money

Office secrets and rumors fit the reversal, along with information being withheld from you. Money mistakes here come from ignoring a bad feeling about a deal or skipping the fine print. If you’re being kept out of decisions that affect you, it’s fair to ask directly what’s going on.

The High Priestess reversed as feelings

Reversed, the card points to feelings someone is keeping from you, or from themselves. They may be pulling back because they’re confused about what they want, which can make their messages feel guarded or delayed.

The High Priestess reversed as a person

In reverse, she can describe someone secretive or emotionally unavailable, or a person who has stopped trusting their own sense of things and follows the crowd.

The High Priestess reversed: yes or no

It’s a no. Important information is still missing, or you’re overriding what you sense.

The High Priestess reversed as advice

Listen to the hunch you’ve been arguing with. Spend a quiet hour without your phone, and write down what you already know before asking anyone else.

Is the High Priestess a yes or no card?

Her answer is not yet. In her view, either the information you need hasn’t surfaced or your own feelings on the matter aren’t settled. Treat it as a pause with a purpose, and ask again once you know more. A not yet can feel frustrating, and it still beats a decision made on half the facts.

Some readers link the card to pregnancy because of its moon imagery and the sense of something growing out of sight. A pregnancy test or a doctor is the only real answer to that question, and to any other health worry.

The High Priestess as timing: when will it happen?

This card keeps lunar time. Its planet is the Moon, so its natural unit is a lunar month, about four weeks from one new moon to the next, and it leans toward slow reveals more than sudden news.

For a season, look to Cancer, June 21 to July 22, the sign the Moon rules. The High Priestess also ties timing to information. The answer comes when the missing piece turns up, and news you’re waiting on usually arrives after the people involved have finished deciding, often a few weeks out.

The High Priestess as advice, action and outcome

The High Priestess as advice

Trust your first read. Give yourself time alone before a big decision, keep your plans private for now and pay attention to what your body tells you in certain rooms or with certain people. Write your hunches down so you can check them later. A notebook by the bed is very much in her spirit.

The High Priestess as action

Restraint is usually the move here, like waiting a day before replying or sleeping on a decision. Doing research before anyone knows you’re considering a change counts too.

The High Priestess as an outcome

Landing as the outcome, the High Priestess points to clarity that comes with time more than a dramatic event. You end up understanding the situation, and that understanding becomes the answer.

The High Priestess in the past, present and future positions

From earlier in your life, the card points to a hunch that turned out right or a secret that shaped things, and it asks what that taught you about trusting yourself.

These days, it asks you to listen before you act, especially in conversations where you’d normally jump in first.

In time, it shows something hidden coming to light at a pace you can handle.

The High Priestess and the zodiac signs

The Moon is the High Priestess’s planet, and water is her element. She has no single zodiac sign, though the Moon’s own sign, Cancer, is the natural match.

Cancers often feel at home with her protective, intuitive side. Scorpio relates to the secrets she keeps and may find her patience easier than most. Gemini, which likes to talk everything through, finds her silence hard and benefits from trying it anyway. Pisces, ruled by Neptune, shares her feel for what goes unsaid, though a Pisces hunch still needs checking against the facts.

The High Priestess tarot card combinations

She pairs most often with these seven, starting with the card right before her.

The High Priestess and the Magician: Thought, then action. You’ve settled privately on what you want, and the Magician says the tools to start are already within reach. See the Magician card meaning.

The High Priestess and the Hermit: Deep reflection. Answers come from solitude and patience, and outside opinions add little right now. See the Hermit card meaning.

The High Priestess and the Moon: Dreams and instincts run strong, and so does confusion. Give a hunch a week and a few facts before you act on it. See the Moon card meaning.

The High Priestess and the Empress: Intuition that turns into creation, like an idea you’ve carried privately for months finally taking shape. See the Empress card meaning.

The High Priestess and the Chariot: Patience against momentum. The pair asks you to know where you’re going before you push. See the Chariot card meaning.

The High Priestess and the Hierophant: Inner knowing and outside rules. Your gut and the rulebook may disagree, and the pair asks which one you’ll follow. See the Hierophant card meaning.

The High Priestess and the Hanged Man: Double the patience. Nothing has to be decided yet, and what you notice in the meantime will shape the answer. See the Hanged Man card meaning.

The High Priestess tarot card: frequently asked questions

Yes, in a quiet way. She stands for intuition and inner wisdom, and she’s a good sign when you need to trust yourself. Her challenge is patience, since she rarely brings fast answers or outward action.

Her answer is not yet. The information you need hasn’t come out, so wait and ask again later. Reversed, it’s a no. For pregnancy and health, ask a doctor.

The Tarot de Marseille and other older decks called her La Papesse, the female pope, sometimes linked to the medieval legend of Pope Joan. The Rider-Waite version swaps her papal crown for a lunar one and seats her between temple pillars, which is why many readers connect her with ancient priestesses and with the Moon itself.

It points to unspoken feelings, quiet attraction and a connection that runs deeper than words. The card favors patience and trusting your gut about a person, and it suggests not everything has been said yet.

Someone secretive, emotionally distant or hard to read, sometimes with an agenda they aren’t sharing. Sometimes it’s a person who has stopped trusting their own instincts and leans on everyone else’s opinion.

To listen to yourself. Your intuition already has a view on the situation, and the card asks you to give it room before you act. A long walk or a night’s sleep often brings the answer forward.

No. Her moon imagery is why the question comes up at all, but a card has no way of knowing. A test or a doctor will tell you.

The bottom line on the High Priestess

Behind her veil is everything you haven’t let yourself know yet. Her advice is to sit with that and trust what your gut keeps telling you until the picture is complete. Her not yet is temporary, and the answer she points to is usually one you’ll recognize the moment you hear it.
