Temperance tarot card symbolism: what the picture shows

Watch the water. A tall angel pours it from one golden cup into another, and the stream runs sideways between them at an angle no real pour would take. Nothing spills. That impossible, unhurried flow is the heart of the card, two things being mixed until the proportions are right.

The angel has wide red wings and a plain white robe. On the forehead is a small circle, the sign of the sun in Waite’s own notes on the card. On the chest, a square with a triangle inside it is drawn onto the robe, a symbol Waite tied to the number seven and that many readers take as spirit held inside the body. Waite wrote about the angel as “him” and then added that the figure is neither male nor female.

One foot rests in a pool of water and the other on the dry bank. The angel stands between two worlds, feeling and practicality, and keeps a foot in each. Yellow irises grow at the water’s edge, flowers named for Iris, the Greek messenger goddess of the rainbow.

Behind the angel, a path winds from the pool up into the distance and between two mountains, where a soft crown of light rises over the peaks. It’s a long road, and the light at the end of it is real but far away.

The card’s name comes from an old word for mixing in proportion, the way a blacksmith tempers steel or a cook tempers chocolate. Moderation is one meaning. The deeper one is the skill of blending things that don’t naturally go together.

Temperance tarot card meaning: the upright card

After a rough patch, the body and the mind need a while to settle, and Temperance is the card of that settling. Upright, it describes life finding its level again after being pulled too far one way. Nothing about it is flashy. It’s the person who went to bed at a reasonable hour for a month and noticed one morning that they felt like themselves again.

The angel never stops pouring, and that’s the clue to how this card works. Proportion here is something you keep adjusting, the way you’d juggle a demanding job with a family or ambition with rest. Small corrections made every day add up, and the card trusts them more than any big gesture. What they add up to is recovery, from a breakup or from a stretch of burnout that went on too long.

Just before it sits Death, card thirteen, where something ended, so Temperance is often read as the recovery that follows. The Devil, card fifteen and the card of excess, sits on its other side, and next to that neighbor Temperance reads as a reminder to keep the mix right.

It also describes cooperation, two people or two ideas blended into something that works better than either alone. A blended family learning to share holidays fits this card, and so does a team where the cautious planner and the risk-taker finally learn to trust each other.

I like to ask people who draw Temperance what they’d change if they only had to change it by ten percent. The card usually points to an adjustment more than an overhaul, a little less of one thing and a little more of another.

Temperance tarot card in love and relationships

In love, Temperance is peaceful more than passionate. It describes love that feels easy to be in, where two people fit together without forcing it. There isn’t much drama here. What the card offers instead is companionship that still works on an ordinary weeknight ten years in, the couple who can disagree about the thermostat and still laugh about it by bedtime.

If you're single

Single people who draw Temperance are usually in a good place to meet someone, open to it without being desperate. The card favors dating at a sensible pace, a few good conversations before any big commitment, and it raises an eyebrow at anyone who wants to move in after three dates. It can describe the stage after a breakup where the hurt has eased enough that you can think about the next person without measuring them against the last one. If you’ve been swinging between swearing off dating and saying yes to everyone, the card suggests a middle setting, one or two dates a week with people you’d actually like to see again.

If you're in a relationship

Inside a relationship, Temperance describes harmony built through compromise. Each person gives a little, and the relationship becomes a blend of two lives instead of one person absorbing the other. Disagreements about money or where to live suit this card well, because it favors the middle option both people can accept, like splitting the holidays between families or keeping one shared account and one each. Temperance also turns up when a couple is mending after a hard patch and learning a calmer rhythm. Couples counseling sits comfortably with this card, two people and a third person helping them find the right mix.

Reconciliation and your ex

A Temperance reconciliation is a slow one. If you and your ex are back in touch, the card supports taking it a step at a time, a phone call before dinner and friendship before anything more. It describes getting back together built on repair more than on longing, and it asks whether both of you have changed the habits that caused trouble the first time. Rushing back in would go against everything the card stands for. If only one person has done the work, the mix is still off. The card also can’t tell you whether your ex wants this, and that answer has to come from them.

Temperance as feelings: how someone feels about you

Temperance shows feelings that are calm and sincere. The person feels at ease with you and finds you good for them, someone whose company settles their nerves. Their interest may grow slowly, which can be frustrating if you want a clear signal now. What the card shows is steady affection more than a rush, the feelings of someone who texts back at a normal pace and remembers what you said last week.

Temperance as intentions

Temperance describes someone who wants something sustainable and isn’t in a hurry. They’d rather build carefully than burn out fast, and they may suggest a pace that feels cautious to you. Calm words are easy to offer, so watch whether the pace they set holds up over the coming months.

How someone sees you

This card says you’re a calming influence. The other person sees someone balanced and easy to be around, the friend who can talk them down from a bad mood without making a fuss. The card shows them feeling steadier around you. Whether they say so out loud is another matter, since Temperance describes quiet appreciation more than big declarations.

Temperance tarot card in career and money

At its best on the job, Temperance is the long game. It describes steady progress and a schedule you can actually keep. The card suits work in healthcare, counseling, mediation and teaching, anything that involves bringing people or ideas together. It also fits the moment you start fixing a lopsided work-life balance, like the person who starts leaving at six and finds they get more done.

Temperance favors a role that fits your pace, with room to grow over time instead of overnight. Balance is worth asking for alongside money, like a hybrid schedule or a workload one person can carry. Going into an interview, careful preparation and an even manner serve you better than trying to dazzle. If you’re returning to work after leave or a layoff, the card favors easing back in, a few clear priorities in the first month rather than proving everything at once.

Temperance handles money one month at a time, setting aside what you can and spending without guilt inside a plan. It favors regular investing over chasing quick wins and paying down debt at a pace you can keep. For bigger financial decisions, a qualified advisor can help you find the right mix.

Temperance as a person

In any friend group, Temperance is the one who stays neutral when the group chat turns into a fight and somehow gets everyone talking again by dinner. These are calm, adaptable people who are good at bringing opposites together, and they’re often the peacemakers in their families. They know how to enjoy things without overdoing them. Sometimes they keep the peace at their own expense, swallowing an opinion to avoid a scene, and the people who love them learn to ask what they really think.

Temperance reversed meaning

Spill the cups and you have Temperance reversed. The careful mix has tipped too far one way, and life starts to feel out of sync.

Often it looks like too much of something. Eighty-hour weeks and spending past the budget are the classic examples, and so is going back to the gym after months off and getting hurt on the first day. Feelings swing too, all in one week and all out the next.

The other side of the reversal is hurry. You want results now, and a good plan gets dropped because it’s slow, like quitting a savings goal in March because January’s progress looked small. Between two people, it shows a mismatch in speed, one person ready to talk about moving in while the other is still deciding about the weekend.

Because the word temperance has long been tied to alcohol, the reversed card sometimes comes up around drinking. If cutting back has been hard, it’s worth talking to a doctor or a counselor, who can help in ways a card can’t.

Temperance reversed

Temperance reversed in love

Love with this card upside down usually feels lopsided, one person giving much more than the other. Arguments may be getting heated, or the relationship swings between intense closeness and distance. A reset helps here, a rhythm both people can manage, and sometimes outside help such as a couples counselor.

Temperance reversed in career and money

Burnout is the main risk on the job, along with friction when nobody on the team will meet halfway. Money swings between strict saving and splurging, and the card asks for a budget you can live with for longer than two weeks.

Temperance reversed as feelings

Upside down, this card shows feelings that won’t settle. The person may be impatient for things to move faster or overwhelmed by everything else going on, and either one can make them seem hot and cold with you.

Temperance reversed as a person

Reversed, this is someone who does everything at full volume and burns out on a schedule. It can describe the opposite problem too, a person so busy keeping the peace that their own needs have gone missing.

Temperance reversed: yes or no

Reversed, Temperance answers no, at least until things are back on an even keel. Slow down and get your footing first, then ask again.

Temperance reversed as advice

Pick one thing you’re overdoing and dial it back a little. Rest before you push again, and let progress be gradual.

Is Temperance a yes or no card?

Temperance gives a yes, and it’s a patient one. The answer leans favorable as long as you don’t rush it, and the card is especially encouraging about getting back on your feet and about long-term plans.

That yes describes the direction things are moving more than a guaranteed result. If you’re asking whether to try again after a setback, the card’s answer is yes, with smaller steps this time. On pregnancy and other medical questions, the card stays quiet, and a doctor is the person to ask.

Temperance as timing: when will it happen?

Sagittarius season runs from November 22 to December 21, late fall into the start of winter, and that’s the season linked to Temperance.

The card’s real clock is slower. Things unfold over weeks and months, the way a sprained ankle or a bruised friendship mends. In a timing question, Temperance points to a result that arrives after patience and a few small adjustments.

Temperance as advice, action and outcome

Temperance as advice

Find the middle path. If you’ve been going hard in one direction, ease off, and if you’ve been neglecting something, give it more room. Small changes beat dramatic ones with this card, and they need a few weeks to show results.

Temperance as action

Temperance acts in a measured way, like a compromise offered in a tense negotiation or a gradual return to a routine after a setback. From someone else, it’s an effort to meet you halfway.

Temperance as an outcome

Temperance at the end of a spread points to equilibrium restored, a situation settling into something sustainable and people finding a way to work together. Getting there takes time, and the result the card describes is calm and hopeful.

Temperance in the past, present and future positions

Temperance in the past marks a period of recovery or a compromise that steadied things, and what you learned then still helps.

Showing up in the present, it says you’re in the middle of mending, and the quiet work is doing more than it seems.

In a future position, it points to calmer times built from the adjustments you make now.

Temperance and the zodiac signs

Sagittarius, a fire sign ruled by Jupiter, is the sign linked to Temperance. That might seem odd for an angel pouring water, and the pairing is the point. The card mixes fire and water, opposites that only work in the right proportion.

Sagittarius is famous for wanting more of everything, more travel and more freedom. Temperance shows that sign its best version, enthusiasm that knows when to stop. Virgo and Capricorn, both earth signs, often find the card’s patience familiar. Fire signs who would rather sprint can find its pace frustrating and useful in equal measure.

Temperance tarot card combinations

Temperance changes the pace of every card it meets. Here are seven pairs that come up often.

Temperance and Death: Life after an ending. The loss is real, and recovery has quietly started. See the Death card meaning.

Temperance and the Devil: Moderation and excess, side by side in the deck. Together they point to a habit that has slipped from enjoyable to too much, and to the middle setting that would fix it. See the Devil card meaning.

Temperance and the Star: Hope and repair. The Star brings hope back after a long low stretch, and Temperance turns it into a routine you can keep, so progress builds gradually. See the Star card meaning.

Temperance and the Magician: Skill applied with patience. An idea gets refined until it works, like a recipe tested ten times before the dinner party. See the Magician card meaning.

Temperance and Justice: Fairness with give in it. Each side gives up a little, and the arrangement holds because neither feels cheated. See the Justice card meaning.

Temperance and Strength: Gentle persistence. Recovery that takes discipline and kindness in equal amounts, such as physical therapy after an injury. See the Strength card meaning.

Temperance and the Chariot: Speed meeting patience. You’re eager to move, and the pair says progress comes from careful steering more than from flooring it. See the Chariot card meaning.

Temperance tarot card: frequently asked questions

Romantic in a quiet way. Temperance describes harmony and a relationship that feels easy to sustain. It bodes well for long-term love and for repairing a relationship after a difficult season, and couples who are learning to compromise see it often, even if fireworks aren’t its style.

Neither, really. Waite referred to the angel as “him” and then said the figure is neither male nor female, and most decks keep that androgynous look. In a reading, Temperance can describe a person of any gender who brings calm and balance into a room.

Yes, with the condition that things happen gradually. Upside down, the card says no until things are back on an even keel. Medical questions, pregnancy included, are for a doctor to answer.

That opposites can work together. The angel stands on land and in water at once, and the card teaches you to blend what seems to clash, like ambition and rest or independence and closeness, instead of choosing one and starving the other.

It shows calm, sincere affection. The person feels at ease with you and sees you as good for them, and their interest may build slowly. Reversed, the card shows feelings that are unsettled or out of step with yours, often because the timing is off for one of you.

Temperance reversed means excess, impatience or being out of sync. Something has tipped too far, like overwork or overspending, or two people are moving at different speeds. The card suggests slowing down and finding your footing before making big decisions.

Not necessarily. The word temperance has a long history with alcohol, but the card means moderation in general, in work, money, emotions or habits. If it comes up around drinking and cutting back has been hard, talking with a doctor or counselor is a good next step.

The bottom line on Temperance

An angel with one foot in the water and one on land, pouring a stream that never spills. Temperance shows up when something in your life has been lopsided and is ready to be mixed again, a little at a time. Its answer is rarely dramatic. Adjust the amounts, then give the change time on the long road the angel is standing on.
