The Star tarot card meaning: upright, reversed, love and yes or no
The Star tarot card means hope is coming back after a hard time. Upright, it points to healing and renewed faith in where you’re headed. Reversed, it shows discouragement, with the hope still there but hard to feel. As a yes or no, it’s a yes.

The Star tarot card symbolism: what the picture shows
The woman on the Star card has brought nothing with her but two pitchers of water. She kneels at the edge of a pool with one knee on the ground and one foot resting on the surface, and she is emptying both pitchers.
One stream goes back into the pool. The other lands on the grass and runs off in five thin lines. Nothing is being saved or measured. The card before this one is the Tower, where everything gets knocked down, and the first thing the deck shows afterward is someone giving water away as if there will be more.
She is naked, which here reads as having nothing left to hide or defend. The crowns and robes of the earlier cards are gone. What’s left is a person, outdoors, at ease.
Above her hangs one large yellow star with eight points, and seven smaller white ones around it. They give far less light than the sun does, and the card is built on that difference. A star gives you a direction to walk in, even though it can’t light the road.
On a tree behind her sits a small bird, most likely an ibis. It’s easy to miss, and plenty of people only spot it on a second look.
The Star tarot card meaning: the upright card
The Star follows the Tower, where something collapsed, and leads into the Moon, a night of doubt. It’s the clear evening in between, when the dust has settled and you can see the sky again.
Upright, it means hope is returning, and that the hope is reasonable. Something has ended or broken. You’ve stopped bracing for the next blow, and for the first time in a while the future looks like a place you might want to go. The hard part did happen. The card marks the point where you start to look past it.
The Star gets mixed up with the Sun, which is a later stage. The Sun is the good thing itself, out in the open. The Star is earlier and quieter, before anything has been delivered, when you’ve just started to believe it could be and you’re acting a little differently because of it.
The first thing I look for with this card is what the person had given up on. The Star usually points straight at it. It might be the idea of being loved well, or of doing work you care about.
It’s also a card about being yourself without the performance. The woman in the picture isn’t dressed for anyone. In practice that means you can stop managing how you look to other people for a while and put that effort into recovering.
The Star tarot card in love and relationships
In love, the Star is one of the best cards you can get, and it works slowly. It shows trust being rebuilt, in another person or in the idea of love at all. It fits people who’ve been hurt and are opening up again better than it fits first love.
People ask whether the Star is a soulmate card. Tarot has no official one, but this is the card of a connection that feels like relief, where you can be seen as you are.
If you're single
If you’re single, the Star shows up around the time you start feeling ready again. The signs are small. You notice you’ve gone a week without checking your ex’s profile, or you catch yourself curious about someone and it doesn’t feel like a risk assessment. The card favors meeting people as yourself, without the edited version. It can’t say whether or when someone comes along, only that first dates go better when you arrive unguarded.
If you're in a relationship
In a relationship, the Star marks a period of repair. If the two of you have come through something hard, like a loss or a breach of trust, and have both chosen to stay, the card shows two people who have started to mend things. From the outside it looks ordinary. One of you apologizes without being asked. You make a plan for next summer and both mean it.
If things have been fine all along, the Star simply shows a relationship where neither of you has to keep up an act.
Reconciliation and your ex
On reconciliation, the Star is hopeful and honest at once. It’s a good sign when both people have healed and changed, because it shows goodwill and no bitterness. It also has a second reading that people skip. Sometimes the hope it restores is hope in general, and the healing it shows is you getting over this person. Look at the cards beside it. With the Lovers or the Two of Cups, it points the two of you back toward each other. On its own, or with a card about moving on like the Eight of Cups, it points toward making peace with how things ended.
The Star as feelings: how someone feels about you
When the Star stands for someone’s feelings, it shows a person who feels hopeful about you and calm around you. You’re a relief to them, and they come away from a conversation with you feeling better about their own life. The feeling is warm, with admiration in it and a sense that something good is possible, and it’s often slow to turn into action. Whether they act on it is a question the Star leaves open.
The Star as intentions
For intentions, the Star shows goodwill. The person means well and wants something real with you, or at the very least wants good things for you, and they’re in no hurry. A card can’t vouch for anyone, so let their behavior over time confirm it.
How someone sees you
When the question is “How do they see me?” the Star is close to a compliment. They see you as calm and genuine, someone who makes things better and maybe sits a little out of reach. That last part is worth noticing. The Star can put you on a pedestal, and a person on a pedestal doesn’t get asked out much. If you’d like them closer, let them see something ordinary about you.

The Star tarot card in career and money
At work, the Star shows direction coming back. It often follows a layoff or a stretch of burnout, when you’ve stopped believing your work could feel meaningful. The card says that belief is returning, and that the next move should be chosen for fit and not for speed. It suits creative work and anything done in service of other people.
If your question is about a job offer or an interview, the Star is an encouraging card to see. It suggests the role suits who you are now, including the parts of you the last job had no use for. After an interview, it can’t tell you whether an offer comes. If one does, take the usual care with the contract.
With money, the Star is recovery at a walking pace. It fits the stage where the debt goes down a little each month, or the savings account has a balance again. It rewards the plan you can keep up for a year, and it has nothing to say about windfalls.
The Star as a person
The Star as a person is the friend people call when they need to feel like things will be okay. They’re calm and they don’t perform. They tend to be generous with their time, and idealistic in a way that has survived some disappointment. The card fits Aquarius types, independent people who care about a cause. Their weak spot is that they can be so even-tempered that you can’t tell what they need.
The Star reversed meaning
Reversed, the Star is the feeling of pouring and pouring with nothing to show for it. You keep showing up and giving, and it seems to go nowhere.
The plain word for it is discouragement. You’ve lost faith in a plan, or in your own ability to change your situation. Often there’s no single event behind it. The progress is slow, and hope has started to feel naive. You can also feel cut off from the people and things that used to restore you.
The reversal is rarely as dark as it feels. In most readings the hope is still there under the tiredness, which is why the card’s first advice is rest. It asks what would refill you, and it expects the answer to be something small.
The Star reversed in love
In love, the Star reversed shows someone who has stopped expecting much. You go on the date already composing the story of how it disappointed you. In a relationship, it’s the stretch where you’ve both stopped making plans, less out of anger than out of tiredness. It can also show a pedestal coming down. Someone you idealized turns out to be a regular person, and the letdown feels bigger than the facts justify. Repair starts with lowering the stakes and doing something easy and pleasant together.
The Star reversed in career and money
At work, this is burnout and creative block, the feeling that your effort disappears without a trace. People like to say this feeling comes right before a breakthrough. The card can’t promise that, and it shouldn’t be used as a reason to keep grinding. It’s a better argument for a real break. With money, the reversed Star shows discouragement about slow progress. Look at the numbers over a year instead of a month before you decide the plan has failed.
The Star reversed as feelings
When the reversed Star stands for someone’s feelings, it shows discouragement about the connection, or a sense of not deserving it. They may like you and doubt they have anything to offer. They may have hoped for something with you and concluded it isn’t going to happen. As intentions, it usually shows no move being planned, often because they’ve stopped believing it could work. If you want to reach them, a little reassurance goes further than pressure.
The Star reversed as a person
The Star reversed as a person is the one who used to be the optimist. They’ve become guarded and a little cynical, and they’ll tell you they’re only being realistic. Underneath, they’re usually someone who gave a lot and got tired.
The Star reversed: yes or no
The Star reversed is a “not yet.” It falls short of a yes, usually because you or the other person has run low on belief or stamina. The card doesn’t rule it out.
The Star reversed as advice
The Star reversed advises you to stop pouring for a while and fill up. Sleep, eat real meals, see the friend who makes you laugh, spend an afternoon on something with no purpose. If the low mood has lasted for weeks and nothing lifts it, talk to a doctor or a therapist. That’s a practical step, and the card would count it as one.
Is the Star a yes or no card?
The Star is a yes. It’s a calm, long-range yes, the kind that says you’re headed the right way and makes no promise about Friday.
On a question about a specific result, like a job offer or a move, it’s encouraging and stops short of a guarantee. For an ex, see the reconciliation section above, where the card reads two ways.
The Star looks hopeful, which is exactly why it shouldn’t be leaned on for a diagnosis, a pregnancy or a treatment. Those questions belong with your doctor.
The Star as timing: when will it happen?
For a date range, use Aquarius season, January 20 to February 18. Outside of that, think in months. This is a card of gradual improvement, so a fair estimate is a season from now.
Watch the trend as well as the calendar. The Star’s timing starts once things have stopped getting worse and one small thing has gotten better. From that point the card describes a steady climb, with ordinary bad days in it.
The Star as advice, action and outcome
The Star as advice
When the Star answers “What should I do?” it says to keep going and to go gently. Stay with the plan that has been working, and give yourself an evening this week that has nothing to do with the problem. It’s also a card for saying plainly what you want, so if you’ve been hinting, try asking.
The Star as action
The Star’s kind of action is an open hand. On what someone else will do, the Star doesn’t promise a move. Any move it does show is low-key, like a kind message or an offer to help. For your own part, be direct and generous, and let the other person answer in their own time.
The Star as an outcome
In the outcome position, the Star is a good sign. It shows the situation settling into peace and renewed confidence. It’s less specific about the form. You might get the thing you asked about, or you might end up at ease without it. In either case the card points to you feeling steadier than you do now.
The Star in the past, present and future positions
Drawn for the past, the Star shows a period of recovery or inspiration that you’re still drawing on. Something restored you once, and the reading suggests you remember how.
Drawn for the present, it’s the calm after something hard. Use it to rest and to decide what you want next.
Drawn for the future, it points to relief up ahead. If the present is rough, the Star treats it as a stretch that ends.
The Star and the zodiac signs
The Star is the Aquarius card, and its element is air. Aquarians tend to recognize themselves in its long view and its hope for something better than what’s on offer.
For the other two air signs, Gemini and Libra, the Star usually arrives as a change of mind before anything changes in practice. Fire signs get the harder version, a lesson in patience, since the Star moves slower than Aries, Leo or Sagittarius would like. The meaning itself is the same whoever draws it.
The Star tarot card combinations
Here is how the Star reads beside seven other cards.
The Star and the Moon: You believe things can improve, and part of you is waiting for the catch. The pair says to keep going without demanding certainty first. See the Moon card meaning.
The Star and Death: A clean ending followed by relief. Something is over, and the grief has started to make room for something else. This is one of the gentler ways the deck describes starting again. See the Death card meaning.
The Star and the Sun: Hope with something solid behind it. Together these two are about as encouraging as tarot gets, though no pair of cards settles an outcome. See the Sun card meaning.
The Star and the Tower: The Tower is the collapse and the Star is the first calm after it. Read together, they describe getting through something, with the Star as the part where you start to recover. See the Tower card meaning.
The Star and the Lovers: A relationship built on honesty, between two people who can show each other who they are without flinching. For a new connection, it’s a sign to stay open. See the Lovers card meaning.
The Star and the World: A long effort reaching its finish with your faith intact. You did the thing, and you still like who you are at the end of it. See the World card meaning.
The Star and Temperance: Healing at its own pace. Both cards pour water, and both are about patience. Together they describe getting better by small, regular steps. See the Temperance card meaning.
The Star tarot card: frequently asked questions
What is the Star card telling me?
That it’s reasonable to hope again. The Star follows the Tower in the deck, so it tends to show up after a loss or an upheaval. It asks you to rest and to give a slow improvement time to show.
Is the Star a positive card?
Yes. Few cards are as welcome, and few are as quiet. It stands for hope and recovery more than for sudden good luck. Even reversed it’s mild. The reversed Star shows discouragement, and discouragement can lift.
Is the Star a yes or no card?
The Star is a yes, with patience. It says you’re headed the right way and makes no guarantee about a specific result. The Star reversed is a “not yet.” For medical questions, including pregnancy, don’t use it as a yes or no.
What does the Star reversed mean?
The Star reversed means discouragement and lost faith. Progress feels slow and hope seems naive. In most readings the hope is still there and you’re too worn down to feel it. The advice is to rest and refill before you decide anything is finished.
Does the Star card mean pregnancy?
No card can confirm a pregnancy or tell you your chances. The Star is linked with hope and renewal, which is why it has a reputation as a good sign for people trying to conceive. That reputation is tradition and says nothing about your body. For that answer, take a test and talk to your doctor.
Is the Star the wish card in tarot?
The traditional wish card is the Nine of Cups, and the Star is the card of hope. When the two show up together, the reading can’t tell you whether you get the thing you’ve wanted for so long, but it’s a kind pairing to draw for it.
What zodiac sign is the Star card?
Aquarius. The Star is card XVII of the Major Arcana and its element is air. It sits between the Tower and the Moon. For timing, it points to Aquarius season, January 20 to February 18.

The bottom line on the Star
The Star is what hope looks like once it has some experience. It comes after the collapse and pours the water anyway. If you drew it, the card is about letting yourself want something again.
