Four of Pentacles tarot card symbolism: what the picture shows

A crowned man wraps both arms around a gold pentacle and presses it to his chest like something he’s afraid to drop. A second coin balances on top of his crown, and he plants one foot on each of two more. Every pentacle he owns is pinned in place by some part of his body, so he can’t stand, reach or walk without losing one.

Under a dark mantle he wears a red robe with blue at the hem, and his shoes are red too. Behind him a city rises, towers and rooftops he has turned his back on. The plain gray sky gives nothing away. Plenty of life is going on back there, trade, neighbors, shops and people to see, and he sits outside it guarding four coins. Security has a cost, and in this picture the cost is the life happening behind his back.

Waite described “a crowned figure, having a pentacle over his crown,” who “clasps another with hands and arms,” and noted that “two pentacles are under his feet.” His summary takes seven words, “He holds to that which he has.” The picture says the same thing without a caption, and the line reads like a verdict and a warning at once. His expression stays calm. He isn’t miserable, only careful, so the card can feel reasonable to anyone living it.

The coin on his crown is the detail I always mention, since it looks less like a treasure and more like a weight he can’t put down. For a kingdom of four coins, Lord of Earthly Power is a grand Golden Dawn label, and the Sun in Capricorn puts ambition and caution in the same sign.

Four of Pentacles tarot card meaning: the upright card

Upright, the Four of Pentacles puts security first, protecting what you’ve worked for, building savings, sticking to a budget and keeping a firm hold on money, time or emotions. After a lean stretch, that caution makes sense. The card’s healthy side looks like an emergency fund growing by a set amount each payday and a card balance that finally reaches zero.

Trouble starts when security turns into control. Holding on too hard can mean refusing to spend on things that matter, guarding your heart so closely that nobody gets in or clinging to a position you’ve outgrown because it feels safe. He has enough and still won’t loosen his arms.

Among Waite’s meanings are “the surety of possessions, cleaving to that which one has” and also “gift, legacy, inheritance.” That last group explains why this Four often comes up around money that came from family, a house that has to be kept up or savings someone worked hard to pass on.

Emotions can be hoarded too. Some people hold back affection, praise or forgiveness the way the man holds his coins, afraid that giving any away leaves them with less. If you’ve kept your feelings locked up to stay safe, notice whether that safety has turned lonely.

After the teamwork of the Three of Pentacles, the Four pulls the coins in close and stops sharing for a while. The Five that follows shows what it feels like when the money runs out anyway, so the Four’s fear has its reasons.

Maybe you check your bank account every morning since buying the house, or you’ve put off hiring help for your small business until next year for three years running. Each habit raises the same question. Is the caution still protecting you, or has it started to cost you more than it saves?

Four of Pentacles tarot card in love and relationships

The Four guards the heart as carefully as the coins. Upright, the Four of Pentacles can describe a stable, loyal bond where both people value security, or a bond where one partner holds on too tightly through jealousy, control over money or a fear of losing the other. Commitment matters here, and so does giving each other room to breathe. Money is often tangled up in it, since spending is a frequent source of friction between partners.

If you're single

You may be guarding yourself after a hurt, holding new people off or judging dates by how secure they seem. Some caution is wise. Too much can mean nobody gets a fair chance, so try letting one person a little closer than feels comfortable. Financial stability may also be high on your list, which is fair as long as it isn’t the only thing on it. Paying for your own dinner can be a quiet way to keep your footing while you decide. A second date with someone who feels safe and a little boring may turn out better than you’d guess.

If you're in a relationship

Stability matters to couples here, a shared home, savings and routines that feel safe. The risk is possessiveness, checking a partner’s phone, controlling the budget or resisting any change because it feels threatening. Talk about what security means to each of you, since one person may mean money in the bank and the other may mean knowing the relationship is solid. A joint savings goal is useful, and so is some no-questions-asked spending money for each partner. When a saver and a spender share a household, a written plan both people sign off on keeps money talks calmer.

Reconciliation and your ex

An ex who keeps appearing in your readings may be someone you’re still holding onto, emotionally or practically, through shared belongings, a car loan or a pet. Reconciling can work when you both release old grievances and agree on what you’re protecting together. If you’re holding on mostly out of fear of being alone, loosen your grip first and see what you want once the fear quiets down. Shared money from the past, a joint account or an old loan, should be settled clearly whatever you decide.

Four of Pentacles as feelings: how someone feels about you

Their attachment runs strong, with a protective streak. They can care deeply while keeping their feelings to themselves, worried about losing you or getting hurt. Sometimes the attachment tips into possessiveness, so notice whether their care feels steady or controlling. Small signs of trust, like sharing a worry or a plan with you, mean a great deal coming from someone like this.

Four of Pentacles as intentions

Their plans lean committed but careful, with security ranked first. Whether that guardedness softens is something only time with them will show, since a card can’t read a person’s character for you.

How someone sees you

As stable, careful and maybe a little guarded. Your way with money and responsibility earns their respect, and some might be curious about what it would take for you to let them in. Others see you as the calm one in a chaotic group.

Four of Pentacles tarot card in career and money

Professionally, the Four favors job security, steady income and careful money management. Often the situation is a stable job you don’t want to risk, a business protecting its cash or a season for building reserves rather than expanding. Holding your position is often the smart move for now.

When cash flow is tight and every expense gets questioned, a small business is living this card. Keeping a reserve is wise, and so is spending on what keeps the business growing, like marketing or a key hire. A company that only protects itself slowly shrinks.

The safer offer, with the reliable salary and the benefits, gets the nod over the exciting gamble. Stability is worth negotiating for, like a longer contract or a guaranteed schedule. A raise request can feel risky with this card, so bring numbers and a calm case. The downside is staying put too long, and if you’ve stopped growing, a careful move can still be a wise one.

Money is front and center with the Four. Saving, budgeting and protecting assets are favored, and so is reviewing insurance or setting up automatic savings. Watch for fear-based choices, like skipping a doctor’s visit or a needed car repair to save money, which can cost more later. For investing, a fee-only advisor can help you balance safety and growth. If you’re paying down debt, small extra payments every month get you there the Four’s way.

The Four of Pentacles as a person

Security outranks almost everything for the people this Four describes. They save, plan and think twice before spending, and they’re often the most financially stable person in their family. Many grew up with very little, and they remember it, whether they’re now retired on a fixed income or earning well.

At their most anxious they track every dollar, hold an inheritance too tightly or micromanage the people around them. When they feel safe, they’re generous in their own quiet way, and others benefit from their steadiness. They often show love through practical security, a stocked pantry, a paid-off car or a college fund, more than through words.

Four of Pentacles reversed meaning

The grip loosens. Money that was hoarded starts to move, someone stops clinging to control or a fear of loss finally eases. That can be healthy, a donation, a long-postponed trip or a decision to trust someone new. Releasing control over a grown child, a co-owner or a family budget can bring relief to everyone involved.

Three words cover Waite’s reversal, “suspense, delay, opposition,” which point to plans stuck in limbo or money tied up where you can’t reach it. Some people swing from hoarding to splurging, and their money habits flip upside down overnight. A big purchase made to prove you’re not stingy can do as much damage as years of refusing to spend.

Greed shows up too, wanting more and more without ever feeling safe, or using money to control others. Insecurity usually sits underneath, so the useful question becomes what would make you feel safe enough to stop gripping. Gambling apps and shopping sprees often feed on that same hunger.

A loss can also come up, money that slips away through poor decisions, a theft or a gamble that didn’t pay off. Recovery starts with a plain budget and some support, including free or low-cost help from a nonprofit credit counselor when debt is involved.

Four of Pentacles tarot card reversed, Rider-Waite deck
Four of Pentacles reversed

Four of Pentacles reversed in love

Loosening control between partners, or the opposite, jealousy and possessiveness getting worse. Talk openly about trust, and give each other room to have friends, money and time of your own. When jealousy becomes tracking, threats or fear, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788) can help you think it through.

Four of Pentacles reversed in career and money

Overspending, a risky purchase or finally investing in yourself after years of holding back. Make sure the money you let go of lands somewhere that matters to you. Paying cash for something you’ve wanted for years can be healthy.

Four of Pentacles reversed as feelings

Insecurity, jealousy or a fear of losing you that comes out sideways. Or someone may be learning to relax and open up slowly. Reassurance that comes through actions helps them more than promises.

Four of Pentacles reversed as a person

A spender who can’t hold onto money, or a controlling person whose grip is slipping. Both versions usually grow from the same fear of not having enough.

Four of Pentacles reversed: yes or no

Not while fear or overspending is in charge. Steady your finances and your nerves first. Once spending is back under control, ask again.

Four of Pentacles reversed as advice

Loosen your grip without losing your footing. Spend on what matters, save the rest and let people in a little more. A small, planned treat fits inside a healthy budget.

Is the Four of Pentacles a yes or no card?

Yes, for whatever you want to keep safe and steady. Ask “Should I keep my job?” or “Should I save instead of buying?” and the answer leans yes. For risky moves, big spending or fast change, the card turns cautious, closer to “hold on” than “go.” Protecting a relationship, a home or a savings goal also leans yes. Reversal brings a different verdict, not while fear or overspending is in charge.

Have a doctor look at any pregnancy or health worry.

Four of Pentacles as timing: when will it happen?

Slow and steady. The Four points to things staying as they are for a while, often a few months, especially with money or property. Delays are possible when someone is holding back a decision or a payment, and patience works better than pressure. Contracts and property sales may take longer than expected. Long-term savings goals match this card’s pace, the steady deposits that add up over a year or more.

The Sun crosses the last stretch of Capricorn from about January 10 to 19, when many people tighten their budgets after the holidays.

Four of Pentacles as advice, action and outcome

Four of Pentacles as advice

Protect what matters, and keep your grip loose enough to move. Save with a plan, and spend on the things that make your life better. Check whether a fear from the past is still setting today’s rules.

Four of Pentacles as action

Build an emergency fund, review your budget, protect your assets or finally use money you’ve saved for its intended purpose. Then put one long-delayed purchase on the calendar.

Four of Pentacles as an outcome

Financial stability and security, with things kept safe. Hold on too hard, though, and you can end up secure and stuck at the same time. Many people reach this outcome and then learn to enjoy what they’ve kept.

Four of Pentacles in the past, present and future positions

A time of scarcity or loss taught you to hold on, and that habit can still shape your spending and your trust.

Security is your focus right now, which is wise as long as fear isn’t making every decision. Separate the fears that protect you from the ones that only limit you.

Saving and consolidation could fill the next stretch, a good time to build reserves before the next move, while keeping enough flexibility to act when an opening comes.

Four of Pentacles and the zodiac signs

With the Sun in Capricorn behind it, the Four wants to keep what it has earned.

Capricorn knows the drive to build and protect. Taurus, another earth sign, feels the comfort of having enough and the fear of losing it. Cancer guards home and family in a similar way, while Sagittarius finds the caution suffocating. Scorpio understands the urge to hold on to what matters most, and Leo may hold on for pride as much as for safety.

Mostly. It’s positive for security, saving and stability, and less so when control or fear takes over. Its best side shows in steady savings and calm planning.

Strongly attached and protective, though they may keep their feelings close and hold back until they feel secure.

Security, loyalty and reassurance. Knowing you’ll stay is huge for them, and proof of commitment matters before they open up fully.

Someone careful with money, protective of what they’ve built and slow to trust, steady and sometimes controlling.

Let go a little. Release control, spend on what matters and stop letting fear make your decisions, without swinging into overspending.

The bottom line on the Four of Pentacles

A crowned man holding four coins as tightly as he can, the Four of Pentacles is about security and the price of clinging to it. Saving, protecting and planning are real strengths here. The trick is holding on loosely enough that you can still move, give and enjoy what you’ve built. Look at what you’re guarding, ask whether it still needs guarding and ease your hold where you can.
