Wheel of Fortune tarot card symbolism: what the picture shows

Four winged creatures sit in the corners of this card, each with an open book, while a great wheel turns in the middle of the sky. An angel sits at the top left, an eagle at the top right, a bull at the bottom left and a lion at the bottom right. Nothing about the spinning seems to bother them. They match the four fixed signs of the zodiac, Aquarius, Scorpio, Taurus and Leo, and in Christian art they stand for the four Gospel writers. The same four figures appear on the World, card twenty-one.

The orange wheel is marked with the letters T, A, R and O. Read one way they spell TARO, and read another they spell ROTA, Latin for wheel, a wordplay older than the deck itself. Between those letters sit four Hebrew letters that spell the name of God, and on the inner spokes are alchemical symbols for mercury, sulfur, salt and water.

Three figures ride the wheel. A sphinx holding a sword sits on top. A yellow snake slides down the left side, and a red figure with a jackal’s head rises on the right, usually identified as Anubis, the Egyptian guide of souls. One figure going down and one coming up, with the sphinx holding its place above them, gives you the whole cycle in a single image.

The wheel floats among gray clouds against a blue sky, with no ground anywhere in sight. None of it rests on anything solid, which is part of the message.

It’s card number ten, the end of one count and the start of the next, and it sits almost exactly halfway through the Major Arcana.

Wheel of Fortune tarot card meaning: the upright card

Everybody’s luck changes eventually, and this card marks the moment it does. Upright, the Wheel of Fortune describes a turn in circumstances, usually for the better, often from a direction you didn’t expect. It’s the friend you run into at a wedding who mentions an opening at her company, or the landlord who decides to sell, which finally pushes you to look at buying.

Cycles are the deeper meaning. Seasons turn and markets swing, and the Wheel reminds you that whatever is happening now won’t last forever, good or bad. On a hard week that’s a comfort, and on a great one it’s a gentle warning. Make the most of an upswing, the card says, and remember that a downswing passes too.

Timing matters with this card. The same idea that went nowhere two years ago can take off now, because the market or the people involved have moved. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment, the Wheel says it may be arriving.

It follows the Hermit, card nine, who has been alone with his lantern, and pulls him back into a world that kept moving without him. If you’ve been lying low for a while yourself, this card often shows up as that ends.

The figure I find most useful here is the sphinx on top. It’s the one figure on the wheel that isn’t going anywhere, and staying steady while everything around you shifts is usually the job the reading hands you.

Wheel of Fortune tarot card in love and relationships

In love, the Wheel gets things moving again, especially when they’ve felt stuck. It describes new beginnings that come out of nowhere, relationships entering a new phase and the sense that timing is finally on your side. Because the wheel keeps turning, it also reminds you that every relationship goes through seasons, and a quiet stretch isn’t the end of the story. People often draw it right after a breakup or a long dry spell, when the idea that things could shift feels hard to believe.

If you're single

Chance meetings are this card’s specialty. The Wheel favors saying yes to the last-minute invitation, the friend’s birthday dinner or the class you almost skipped, because the turn it describes often comes from a change in routine. Someone may come into your life through circumstances you couldn’t have planned, like a new job or a move to a different neighborhood. If your dating life has been in a slump, the card says the season is shifting, and it asks you to be open when it does. Trying one new thing a week puts you in more rooms where that can happen.

If you're in a relationship

A relationship going through a transition fits the Wheel. It might be a move, a new job for one partner or the shift from dating to living together. What the card describes is a new phase more than a crisis, and it asks both people to adapt instead of trying to keep things exactly as they were. Couples who’ve been struggling often find this card encouraging, since it says the slow season can turn. It also reminds you that the good stretches deserve celebrating while they’re here, with a dinner out or a weekend away that marks how far you’ve come.

Reconciliation and your ex

Old connections can come back around with the Wheel, especially if circumstances have changed since you split. Maybe one of you is living in town again or the problem that ended things has been resolved. The card asks whether the timing is truly different now or whether you’d be stepping back into the same cycle. Only your ex can tell you what they want, and the card suggests watching for real differences before getting your hopes up. A coffee that feels easy where it used to feel tense is a better sign than a late-night text.

Wheel of Fortune as feelings: how someone feels about you

Feelings shift with this card. This person may be surprised by how they feel about you, especially if you started as friends or met at an unexpected time. Interest may be growing or changing direction, and the card can also show someone whose feelings go up and down depending on what else is happening in their life.

Wheel of Fortune as intentions

Circumstances shape this person’s intentions right now. They may want to move things forward and still be waiting for a new job or a family situation to settle first. The card describes openness to where things go more than a fixed plan.

How someone sees you

You register as a turning point in this person’s life. They may feel that meeting you shifted something for them, or that you showed up at exactly the right time. Some of that is luck, and some of it is you.

Wheel of Fortune tarot card in career and money

Careers move in cycles too. This card often appears around a new opportunity that shows up at the right moment, a company reorganization that opens a door or a project that finally gets funded after years in a drawer. Sales and seasonal work fit it naturally, since they rise and fall on a schedule of their own. Anyone paid by commission or by the project knows the pattern, a busy quarter followed by a slow one.

If you’ve been stuck in the same role for a while, the Wheel suggests movement is coming and asks you to be ready for it, with an updated resume and a few conversations already started. When an upheaval you didn’t ask for arrives, like a new manager or a merger, the card favors adapting quickly over waiting for things to go back to how they were.

Money can come and go quickly with this card, like a bonus or an unexpected bill. It favors putting part of any windfall aside, since the Wheel keeps turning. It isn’t a sign to gamble, and treating it as a betting tip is a fast way to lose money. If betting has stopped feeling like fun, the National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER, is free and confidential.

Wheel of Fortune as a person

Some people land on their feet no matter what happens, and this card describes them. They’re adaptable and optimistic and roll with whatever comes, like the coworker who got laid off on Friday and had three interviews lined up by Wednesday. They’re often travelers, entrepreneurs or people who’ve reinvented themselves more than once. They’re great company on a road trip with no fixed plan. Pinning them down can be hard, since their plans shift week to week and they trust that things will work out.

Wheel of Fortune reversed meaning

Sometimes the Wheel seems to be turning against you. Upside down, the Wheel describes a stretch where plans keep slipping and the timing never quite lines up, the job that falls through at the last minute or the concert that sells out an hour before you log on.

Much of the reversed meaning is about resisting change. The wheel is moving, and you’re refusing to move with it, whether that’s a job you’ve outgrown or a version of a relationship that no longer exists.

Repeating cycles belong here as well, the argument that always ends the same way, or a new partner who turns out a lot like the last one. When that’s the case, the card asks what part of the pattern is yours to change. A run of bad luck does happen, and the reversed Wheel acknowledges it, while reminding you that the wheel hasn’t stopped turning.

Wheel of Fortune reversed

Wheel of Fortune reversed in love

Bad timing is the usual story in love when the Wheel reverses. You meet someone great right before a move, or a relationship strains under outside pressure. Some couples see it when they’re caught in the same loop of breaking up and getting back together. The card favors stepping back from the loop long enough to see it clearly.

Wheel of Fortune reversed in career and money

Delays and last-minute changes of plan fit work questions here, like a promotion that gets postponed or a client who pulls out. If a client walks, use the gap to rebuild your pipeline. Financially, the reversal warns against counting on income that hasn’t arrived yet and against chasing losses.

Wheel of Fortune reversed as feelings

Feelings may be cooling for now or stuck in a loop, warm one week and distant the next, often because of things going on in the person’s life that have little to do with you.

Wheel of Fortune reversed as a person

In its reversed form, the Wheel describes someone who feels like a passenger in their own life, or who fights every change and then calls the result bad luck.

Wheel of Fortune reversed: yes or no

Not right now. The timing is off, and pushing won’t make the wheel turn faster.

Wheel of Fortune reversed as advice

Ride it out. Focus on what you can control, like your habits and your savings, and let go of what you can’t. Look for the pattern you keep repeating and change one piece of it.

Is the Wheel of Fortune a yes or no card?

The Wheel says yes, and the yes usually comes through a change of circumstances. It’s especially warm on questions about timing, new opportunities and whether things will get better, since the card’s whole message is that things move.

Luck is part of the answer, so the card favors staying open and ready more than trying to force a result. Leave questions about pregnancy or health to a doctor, since no turn of the wheel can answer them.

Wheel of Fortune as timing: when will it happen?

Asked about timing, the Wheel describes a sudden shift, often within a few weeks, after a stretch where nothing seemed to move. It favors the moment conditions change more than a date on the calendar.

Sagittarius, the sign Jupiter rules, gives the card a season, late fall into early winter, November 22 to December 21. Jupiter also takes about a year to move through each sign, so some readers connect the Wheel with yearly cycles, like a birthday or the new year.

Wheel of Fortune as advice, action and outcome

Wheel of Fortune as advice

Go with it. When things start moving, take the openings that feel right, and don’t wear yourself out trying to stop a change that’s already underway. Keep something in reserve for the next turn, whether that’s savings, time or goodwill. A few months of expenses in the bank makes it easier to jump when the right door opens.

Wheel of Fortune as action

The Wheel’s action is responsive, like jumping on an opportunity the week it appears or changing course quickly when plans change.

Wheel of Fortune as an outcome

If the Wheel ends the spread, the situation turns, usually in your favor, and the next stretch looks different from the last one. It’s a hopeful outcome that still depends on how you ride it.

Wheel of Fortune in the past, present and future positions

Earlier on, the Wheel shows a lucky break or an upheaval you didn’t plan, one that set your current path in motion.

At present, things are shifting, and staying flexible helps more than sticking to the original plan.

Next, circumstances are about to change, with a good chance it goes your way if you stay ready.

Wheel of Fortune and the zodiac signs

The Wheel is a fire card ruled by Jupiter, the planet of luck and growth. Jupiter has two signs, Sagittarius and, in older astrology, Pisces.

Sagittarius, always ready for the next adventure, usually welcomes the Wheel’s changes. Pisces goes with the flow, which helps, though a passing opportunity still has to be grabbed. Virgo, which likes a plan for everything, may be thrown at first and then cope with surprises better than it expected. Libra, slow to decide, should know that a door opened by luck doesn’t always stay open long.

Wheel of Fortune tarot card combinations

Wheel of Fortune tarot card: frequently asked questions

Yes. Upright, it stands for a lucky turn and positive change, and it often appears when a stuck situation starts moving. Its reminder is that luck runs in cycles, so the card asks you to make use of the good stretch while it lasts.

Yes, usually through a change in circumstances. In love it says timing is on your side. When reversed, it says not right now, because the timing is off. Ask a doctor about pregnancy and health.

It means change and good timing. Singles may meet someone through a chance encounter, and couples may be entering a new phase together. The card favors staying open to surprises and adapting as a relationship grows.

Yes. It’s the card people usually mean when they ask about luck, and the Sun and the Star come up too. Its luck is about timing, and it rewards being prepared to act on an opening.

To stop fighting a change that’s already happening and focus on what you can control. The reversed Wheel asks you to ride out a rough stretch, look for patterns you keep repeating and trust that the wheel will turn again.

Someone who feels like life keeps happening to them, or who resists change and then blames bad luck. Another version is a person stuck in the same cycle, repeating choices that lead to the same results.

The letters T, A, R and O can be read as TARO or ROTA, Latin for wheel. Read around the circle, T, A, R and O also give TORA, the word on the High Priestess’s scroll. Between them are four Hebrew letters spelling the name of God, and the spokes carry alchemical symbols for mercury, sulfur, salt and water.

The bottom line on the Wheel of Fortune

Of the three figures on the wheel, only the sphinx stays put. The Wheel of Fortune says circumstances are shifting, often in your favor, and that the good and the bad both come in seasons. Its best advice is to stay steady like the sphinx and take the openings when they come.
